LGBTQ+ People are People

I watched for weeks as right wing news outlets started taking aim specifically at drag events and began calling LGBTQ+ people groomers and pedophiles. I watched as they stoked fear and outrage that your children were somehow being harmed by a drag performer reading them a story at a library. I watched as people who simply want to live their lives and feel safe and be respected members of society were made to be monsters, under the guise of Christianity and a false sense of moral superiority. And then I watched as another mass shooting unfolded. The victims, patrons of Club Q, the only gay bar in town. The victims being the very people that right wing media has been lying to their audience about.

Frustrated and angry, I took to twitter and engaged with an anti-vaxxer turned anti-trans terrorist. She posted about me online and the anger machine started up, and I got my first death threat.

I’m not really a front lines activist. I want to help and be an ally, but I haven’t done much except for quietly support my friends when I can. I don’t have a lot of money to donate, but I can try to sell some of my work and give the money to the groups that do the real hard work.

I was in the middle of personal art project when I decided to use the format of that project for this image. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of prints of this image go to benefit a couple of groups I’ve selected based on people I know who use them. You can see details about these groups if you click through the product listing below.

I hope you like it and purchase one, and if you don’t or can’t afford to, I hope you’ll share this with someone you love.
