Botanical Studies
2020-2025
In the spring of 2020 as things were shutting down due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I was using my loft studio to wrap up some commercial jewelry work. For the two years preceding the pandemic, I experienced a period of rapid growth when it came to my personal photography and the way that I lit my subjects. When the work was completed, I turned to photographing clippings from my garden (Garden 2020) using the same set I was using for jewelry. Later I turned to more intensive studies of leaves and flowers on black.
Together - 2022 - This image was made during my intensive botanical study, a sort of side project that came together after some national events that affected (and continues to affect) marginalized groups here in the United States. This image was printed in limited quantities and all prints have been sold.
Sierra Madre Lobelia - Garden 2020 - This clipping from my garden was photographed using the same set up I used for jewelry lay-downs at the time. This technique allowed me to easily isolate the subject from the background and create this sort of vintage encyclopedia illustration look.
Jerusalem Sage - Garden 2020
Reflections #1 - 2023 - This is another little bit of connective tissue, I plucked this flower from a neighbors garden and brought it into the studio on the same set that I was using to shoot glassware, having just recently completed The Glass Cabinet. I spent a bit of time exploring some leaves and flowers using this mirror surface as a set.
Lavender - Garden 2020
Jasmine - Garden 2020
Hot Lips - Garden 2020
Reflections #2 - 2023 - Sugar bush leaves are a captivating subject. With these images I explored both letting the leaves dry out and revisiting as a subject, as well as manipulating the mirror surface to distort the reflections.
