Glassware
2023-2025
My glassware studies began as an exercise in boredom. I had some creative energy and a free afternoon but was short on inspiration. I decided I would try to challenge myself to pick something very boring and mundane and try to make an interesting composition from it. The first piece out of this study was The Glass Cabinet, featuring a hodge podge collection of carious glassware from my kitchen cabinet.
The Glass Cabinet IV - 2023 - The goal was to pick something very mundane and try my best to make an interesting composition out of it. I spent a few days dialing in the lighting, and something like 2 weeks fussing with the collection and composition. It’s one of my favorite photographs I’ve taken and I learned a lot about my own creative process during this work.
The Looking Glass Self - 2023 - Inspired to introduce more color after reflecting on things I learned while creating The Glass Cabinet earlier in the year, I sourced each of these pieces of glassware specifically for this still life.
Water Bearers - 2025 - The Aquarius entry in my Signs of the Zodiac series, using techniques developed during my glassware study
Vintage Glass Still Life Test #3491 - 2024 - In spring of ‘24 I developed a lighting set up designed to mimic a natural light studio of the type that my hero Irving Penn would’ve used. It was developed mainly for portrait work but there are a few still life’s created during this period. Sort of a creative connective tissue between bodies of work.
Gravity - 2023 - When this double wall glass broke on the inside but stayed intact outside, it was too good a subject to pass up. Every time I revisited this subject and rotated it around on set to find the “right” composition, I landed on something close to this angle.
